The structure and meaning of Job 38:39–39:30
The book is approached as a literary work of art. Codes which function in literature, and in particular in poetry, are treated as points of departure. Even in the deep structure elements can be distinguished which serve as codes to indicate the structure at this level. Such elements or motifs are identified. The motifs succeed each other according to a systematic pattern. This approach is applied to Job 38:39–39:30. The coherence of the text is attested. Aspects of the animal kingdom are used to draw the attention to God's providence. Yet God's actions cannot be forced into a system of mechanical causality. God's actions must be interpreted in the context of the freedom of his love.
