Abstract

Tradition and authority in theology
The problem of authority in theology is as old as the Bible itself. Authority comes into question especially when a new trend in theology diverges from the approved. One can claim authority for a 'new' theology by reinterpretation of an authoritative tradition; by miracle stories; by association of one's theological point of view with an authoritative person from the past; and by an appeal to the oldest stratum in the authoritative text or tradition. This article concentrates mainly on the Biblical era.
